What Makes a Good Photo?

Well, of course, there is no definitive answer to that.  To some degree it is a matter of personal taste.  However, here are some basic points to keep in mind.

1) You've got to have a subject.  Good photos are photos of something fairly specific: a person, a place, a thing.  Photos of countryside, random street scenes, and so on, are rarely any good.

2) You've got to be close enough to your subject.  In most cases your subject should fill most of your frame.  This is often difficult with modern point and shoot cameras, many of which come with fixed, wide angle lenses.

3) Think about composition.  The subject of your photo should be centered (or slightly off center).  You can put your subject off-center, but you should have a reason for doing so.

4) Lighting is critical.  Shooting into the sun rarely works.  Bright, cloudy days often give you your best color saturation.  Early morning and late afternoon make for interesting effects.
