Extra Credit
Anth 1312

Students in ANTH 1312 can earn extra credit in two ways: Students may complete projects for extra credit and students who do poorly on exams may complete "Form C" extra credit.

The project option is as follows:

Students have the option of doing four brief projects during the semester.

A student who completes all four projects may substitute their average grade on these projects for their lowest exam grade or their final exam grade. In addition, I will add five extra credit points for each of the exams not substituted. For example, if you complete all four projects and have the following exam grades: First exam: 70, Second exam: 78, Third exam: 81, Project Grade: 84. I would replace your first exam grade with 84 and add five points to your second and third exam grades, giving you grades of 84, 83, and 89 respectively.

Students may complete 1-3 projects for extra credit. In this case, each project completed with a grade of 80 or higher will count for 4 extra credit points added to your first exam grade. So, for example if your grades were as described above (70, 78, and 81 on the exams) and you completed three projects with a grade of greater than 80 on each, your grades with the extra credit counted would be: 82, 78, and 81 respectively.

This project option and extra credit is subject to the following rules:

1) Students doing projects may not miss more than 6 classes. If a student does miss more than six classes, their projects will not count either for extra credit or for the project option.
2) If a student turns in all four projects and takes all three exams, the averaged project grade will replace the student's lowest exam grade only if the average project grade is higher than the grade it replaces.
3) A student who submits all four projects and is pleased with their first two exam grades and their averaged project grade need not take the final exam.
4) You MUST turn in each project at the deadline appropriate to that project (see deadline dates below). You MAY NOT reach the end of the course, say "oops, I need 12 points of extra credit" and quickly do and turn in the projects. Projects are accepted only on or before the days they are due.
5) All projects are due by 11:59 pm on the dates indicated below.
6) Projects are to be turned in using the dropbox feature of TRACS. Paper projects will not be accepted.
7) Full project descriptions and due dates are available by clicking here or by following the projects link at introtoanthro.net

Form "C" extra credit is available only to those who make less than a 75 on either of the first two exams.  You may use this form of credit to bring those grades up to 75s, but not higher.  Thus, for example, if you make a "55" on the first exam you are eligible for up to 20 points of form "C" extra credit on that exam.  If you make a 73 on the first exam, you are only eligible for 2 points of form "C" extra credit on that exam.   You earn form "C" extra credit by reading articles about anthropology (for 1312) or about religion (for 3305) from The New York Times.  New York Times articles are available to all Texas State students through Lexis/Nexis (look under databases on the library website, use the "guided search" to enter the name of the publication).  You may also find articles directly from the New York Times website (www.nyt.com).  The articles must be at least 500 words long.  You must submit  each article with a 25 word summary written on the back of the last page of each article. You earn three (3) points of extra credit for each article submitted.  I prefer articles published within the last ten years.

"Prepayment" of form "C" extra credit:  You may submit form "C" extra credit at any time (within the deadlines imposed elsewhere in this syllabus).  Form "C" extra credit submitted before you take an exam will only count if your grade on that exam is below 75 (and, as always, only up to a 75).  Form "C" extra credit submitted before exam two will count for exam one.  Form "C" extra credit submitted between exam two and the end of the course will count for exam two.  While anybody may use this, it is is most useful if you miss an exam.  For example, if you miss exam 1, you may still submit form "C" extra credit for exam one.  Then, if when you take the make-up, you score less than 75, that extra credit will be applied.  Because make-up grades are frequently lower than regular grades, I urge you to make use of this opportunity.

Important note: You can definitely improve your grade using extra credit.  However, extra credit does not guarantee you a good grade in the class.  Keep in mind that no extra credit is available for the third exam and that the third exam counts for more than the other two.  This means that if you get a "D" or "F" on the first exam, use all the extra credit available to you, and get a very low grade on the final, you can still get a "D" or "F" for the course.

Important note two: Students who use form "C" extra credit are welcome to do the projects too.
